THE PANTHER CREEK CAMPGROUND
From Carson WA take State Rt 14 West (the Wind River Rd) north and go 4.8 miles to the Panther Creek sign. Turn right onto Old State Rd and then immediately left on to Panther Creek Rd. Go 2.7 miles to the campground on the right. Panther Creek Rd becomes Forest Rt. 65.
Panther Creek Campground is located in the southwest corner of the 1.3 million acre Gifford Pinchot National Forest near the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The campground has three overlapping loops along side Panther Creek. Although the none of the sites are located directly on the creek it's wonderful sound can be heard throughout the campground. The 33 back-in sites are fairly private with an abundance of shade loving under story in a mixed woodland of hemlock, alder and maple with a scattering of large cedars and Douglas fir. There is potable water available and vault toilets. Due to the spread of invasive insects firewood from outside the area is not permitted. Firewood is available at the campground and in nearby Carson.
Panther Creek Campground is in the Mt. Adams Ranger District, offering a vast array of habitats from old growth forest and wetlands to glaciers and high mountain meadows. The campground itself intersects the Pacific Crest Trail. If you are a waterfall lover, one of the best things about this area is the abundance of gorgeous waterfalls. There are 5 waterfall hikes accessible on the Wind River Highway: Big Creek Falls, Curly Creek Falls, Falls Creek Falls, Panther Creek Falls and Lower Lewis River Falls.
Panther Creek Falls may only be 65 feet high but it is gorgeous. Big Creek joins Panther Creek and together they flow over multiple levels forming a chain of waterfalls. Directions: 7.4 miles up Panther Creek Rd there is an unmarked turnout on the right hand side, at the base of a fill covered with medium sized rocks. Park there and walk back down the hill approximately 100 yards to an unmarked gravel path on the other side of the road. It is worth the search.
